lemon-scented pull-apart bread

Posted on 04/18/2012 by sarea_okelani
Pull-apart bread is all the rage. I've done cinnamon-sugar, I've done cheese, and now... lemon! It does take a bit of time to put this together, as is the case with most yeast breads. It's fun to serve to guests, because it's pretty and pulling it apart is such a novelty. It's possible that I might enjoy pulling it apart more than I like eating it. >.>

One confession: I didn't much like the cream cheese frosting. It was... OK? Nothing to write home about. I'd just as soon leave it out next time or try a different recipe. Also, I might have been lazy and instead of using lemon AND orange zest as the recipe called for, I used only lemon.

See, it looks just as good without it, imho! :D If you like the scent of lemon, the smell of this baking is pretty amazing.

The recipe's here -- kind of long and involved, but not difficult. Don't say I didn't warn you!

Just from looking at the pictures, I'd say all-lemon is definitely better than lemon and orange (not a fan of blended flavours here, I even colour-sort gummy bears), and cream cheese frosting on a bread might overpower the actual thing. If it needs any topping at all, I'd probably go for a simple icing mix, made of lemon juice and/or water and icing sugar. The stacking idea is neat! I should try that with other recipes, too. =D

Me too. Don't need cream cheese imho.

Totally agree... a simple lemon icing would have been much better!

I made this. It's beautiful and the citrus is not at all overpowering. A lot of work though! I made it the night before up to the last rising session, put it in the fridge. Took it out the next morning and let it rise for about 1.5 hours and then baked it. So good.

I love the sound of a cinnamon sugar one, did you post it here too?
sarea_okelani 19th-Apr-2012 04:03 pm (UTC)
I didn't! I didn't like how my pictures came out for that one so never posted about it anywhere. It was great, though, you could drizzle a bit of caramel sauce on top and turn it into monkey bread. This was the recipe I used. You won't be able to resist after seeing their photos!

I really need to try this.

Really! I keep saying that every time I see one or that someone else made it. I have lemon pull-apart bread envy! :) I made a pumpkin spice pull-apart bread back in the Fall, and it was delicious! (I'm almost ashamed to say it only lasted about 24 hours between two people. Eep!) Totally agree on the novelty of the design. It's sort of addicting.

I think maybe I was subconsciously waiting on making a lemon one until spring rolled around. Lemons just say "spring" to me!

I thought of you when I saw this one, too! Just because of that raspberry butter braid that you introduced me to... :)
spracker 28th-Apr-2012 03:31 am (UTC)
Ahh, I NEED to make that raspberry butter braid again soon. It's been far too long! Maybe I'll make it for when my mom comes to visit next month. :)

Ooh, this sounds lovely! Seconding the interest in the cinnamon-sugar recipe as well.

Something for my next dinner party!

This was the recipe I used for the cinnamon-sugar version. It was delish!

I can't figure out how to save this post to memories with the new community format.. doesn't seem to be the usual icons anywhere??
Does anyone know how to add a post to memories now?
merlynspen 19th-Apr-2012 01:16 pm (UTC)
Nevermind. Found it.
The star in the section with facebook/twitter etc. Misleading, I thought all of those icons were going to be external.
Ayiyi been a long week!

I've never tried making a yeast bread, always so chicken that I'll screw it up. But that bread looks amazing, just so lemony and vibrant! How perfect for Spring.

Thanks for sharing the recipe with us. Great pictures, too.
