Happy June 1st! On this side of the globe we're welcoming winter today, while on the other side you'll be welcoming summer. Either way, the two seasons always promise delicious cuisine, whether it be winter warmers or refreshing summer food. I'm very much looking forward to what the change of season inspires in you all.
With a new month it's time to close one contest and open another. Next month's theme will be LAYERS. Interpret it how you will, as long as your baked good encompasses the plural: it must be more than two layers (i.e. not a layer of something on top of something else) and the layers must be visually identifiable.
And now it's time to vote on your favourite South American themed dish. Here are our entrants:
Poll #1844136 May's South American theme contest
This poll is closed.
Open to: All, detailed results viewable to: None, participants: 113
Your favourite entry for the month of May was...
I also have an exciting announcement for you guys. The older members among you will remember a time when the theme contests came with a prize in the form of paid time. Well now I'm thrilled to announce that we can one up that: not only will you get 3 months paid time, but also a $50 voucher to a cake decorating store. This will come into effect starting this month, so June's winner will be the first to be awarded the prize.
So to reiterate, here's what you now get for winning the theme contest:
- A banner with your winning entry, to be featured on our user info page for a month
- Your winning dish featured as our Bake of the Month
- 3 months paid time for LJ
- A $50 voucher to Global Sugar Art
I'll message the winner at the conclusion of the poll to arrange your voucher: if you would prefer your voucher to be from another cake decorating or bakeware store, you may choose to do so and let me know then. The only catch is that the voucher needs to be able to be purchased and gifted online.
This will come with a slight rule change: as it used to be when you won paid time, you will not be able to win again for 3 months. You are of course welcome to participate in theme themes if you want to, you just can't win the prizes.
Lastly, as there are prizes involved I'm going to be strict about enforcing the rules, so make sure you head to our user info page and familiarise yourself with them. Specifically, if your theme contest entry does not have the recipe included, I won't include you in the poll. I also use to let slide entries that didn't exactly adhere to the theme, but it won't be fair to do so any more.
I think that wraps everything up for now. Feel free to shoot me a comment if you have any questions.
Meantime, happy baking!

That's why the voucher has to be online, so we can offer it to everyone. And that's why I chose Global Sugar Art as our default - they ship internationally.
If someone with a perm account wins can s/he get extra userpics instead of paid time?
I'd like to ask... what are 'slide entries'?
