Truffle Box Mudcake

A few weeks ago, I was contacted by Zoopa (the social club in our Zoology Department) committee about a cake. They were hosting a fundraising auction and, because I won both judges and people's choice award at this years and last years Bake Off, they wanted me to bake a cake for it.

After lots of umming and ahhing, I finally settled on a simple design that focused on flavour.

The cake was an 8" mudcake, layered and coated with a dark chocolate ganache.

The cake is designed to look like a box of truffles. I gave it brown/chocolate stripes to make it slightly more gender neutral, then swirled with black fondant piping.

I wanted the cake to have a monogram logo. Ordinarily I would have used the name of the recipient for the purpose, but as the cake wasn't for anyone in particular I gave it a "C" for Cakecrumbs. The corners of the box are embellished with twisted white fondant piping.

I didn't have time to make a whole range of truffles myself, so I went with the next best thing: Ferrero.

I had to try super hard to resist nomming them myself.

The cake raised $35 at the auction. That's not even cost price, but it was the highest grossing item in the auction. Most items crawled in $1 increments towards a final price of little more. This cake started at $5 and quickly progressed in $5 increments from there, so that was really flattering.

I can't believe that cake went for $35. The person who won it must have felt like they won the lottery. I know I would have. It's beautiful.

Haha, I hope so. They asked me later how long it took and when I said 12 hours they found it hard to believe. I think people who don't bake just don't understand how much time and cost goes into them.

Haha, almost. ;) I think I would have found it very easy to cut into this one.

Good Lord, this looks DELICIOUS!!!! I want to lick the screen. :) Chocolate is LOVE. Not to mention Ferrero Rocher- my favorites! Nom, nom.

Glad you did so good at the auction!

Thanks so much. Ferrero Rocher are my favourites, too! I always default to them if I don't have time to make the truffles myself. So good.

Very impressive! For $35, someone sure got a sweet deal on this cake. It was nice of you to donate your talents for a good cause.

Thanks. :D I really enjoy baking for fundraising things. It gives me the opportunity to make whatever I want without having to worry about what to do with the cake later - the cause makes it all the more fun.

You always do such beautiful work. I'm jealous. :) I make stuff that tastes awesome, just not so great with the decorating bit.

The taste is the most important part! ;) Decorating comes with time. I used to be terrible at it. I'm still very much learning.

That's gorgeous. I would have bid way higher!! The person who got it is extremely lucky.

I hope they agree with you! I was hoping it would raise a lot more at the auction until I saw how much the other items were going for. Someone got a river cruise for two for $30!

What an absolutely fantastic idea and result--I love what you did with the fondant! Fondant has always been a scary concept to me, and you handle it with so much grace. Congrats on a great success!

Thank you! ♥ It's definitely an intimidating thing to pick up, but with time and practise it becomes easier.
