A great combination of yellow cake and flan.

I got this recipe from the message boards over at www.copykatchat.com.

Flan Cake

1/4 cup caramel syrup
1 yellow cake mix prepared according to box directions
4 eggs
1 can sweetened condensed milk
1 can evaporated milk (the 12 oz. size)

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.  Spray metal bundt pan heavily with Pam.  Pour 1/4 cup of caramel syrup in bottom of pan.

Prepare 1 yellow cake mix according to box directions.  Pour on top of caramel in bundt pan.

In a blender, mix 4 eggs, 1 can sweetened condensed milk, and 1 can evaporated milk.  Pour over  cake mix in bundt pan.

Place bundt pan in a water bath.  Bake for 60 minutes at 350 degrees.  Remove from oven and let sit in water bath for an additional 15 minutes.  Cool cake completely before removing from bundt pan.

**The flan layer that you pour on the top ends up sinking to the bottom so it actually ends up on the top of the cake.  I think the layers look pretty.

Intriguing! I don't like flan myself, but I do like the challenge...haha. Perhaps I will try this for my next potluck :D

Caramel Syrup? I am doped up on Sinus medication, so that might be why it doesn't make sense to me. Is it something you buy in the store or make ??

I'm assuming something like ice cream topping.

I just bought a jar of caramel ice cream topping. =)

Ooh, looks good! I wonder why you pour the cake mix first then the flan, if the flan ends up sinking to the bottom?

Either way, I'm definitely bookmarking this and making it next time I have a hankering for flan. Thanks for sharing. :)

If you pour the flan mixture on the bottom, it will burn and stick to the pan so pouring it on top and letting it sink prevents such from happening. [It may also not attach itself to the cake layer if it was on the bottom.]One would do the same thing with a sweetened cream cheese mixture in order to make a bundt cheese cake.

Bundt cheesecake?

That is the most beautiful thing I've read today.

I normally make a chocolate cake batter pour it into a greased bundt pan. Then I cream 8 ounces of cream cheese with 1/2 cup sugar until light & fluffy and beat in 1 egg. Pour the cream cheese mixture on top of the cake batter and bake per the cake instructions. The cream cheese sinks to the bottom as it is baking.

Ohhhhh! I'm definitely trying this!

fascinating! and...interesting....and fascinating! I remember when I learned to make flan a few years ago, I was so thrilled! I had no idea it was that easy.

That looks really good! Do you think it would make a difference if I just used a regular pan? I'm new to baking, so sorry if this is an obvious question!
[info]blueberryeyes 19th-Jul-2007 02:24 pm (UTC)
I think it would be way too much batter for a regular pan. It filled the bundt pan pretty full.

I'm no expert though, so maybe someone else can help.

Alright. I'll just have to get one soon, then, because I really want to make this. Thanks!
