I need your input bakebakebake!

For my husband's surprise party next month I wanted to set up a cupcake bar. I wanted at least 3 different types of cupcakes and 3 types of frostings. What are you favorite cupcake-frosting combos? Which combos are interchangable?

I didn't want to do just plain jane vanilla or chocolate but I would. I would prefer to make my own but box-mix suggestions are cool too.

If you have a boss recipe, I would appreciate it, but I really am just looking for flavors that go together.

ETA: I have pretty much settled on vanilla and chocolate cupcakes with lavendar, vanilla buttercream, peanut butter and chocolate frosting. I may do a lemon frosting too because that sounds delicious.

I'm still open for recommendations though!

Chocolate goes well with orange, vanilla, mint, raspberry, cherry, coffee, etc. What about thinking of his (and your) favorite desserts, candies, or drinks and recreate those in cupcake form?

I must host a party. I must have a cupcake bar.

The idea came from <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Crazy-About-Cupcakes-Krystina-Castella/dp/1402719949/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1214582888&sr=8-1>Crazy About Cupcakes</a>. I <33 that book.

Chocolate and orange are nice. This is quite a good recipe. I made them a couple of months ago and they all got eaten.

But I don't think there's a yummier cupcake than these. So, so good. :)

Oh my god, those black bottom cupcakes sound amazing!

I'v always found a nice tart lemon icing goes well with most plain and fruity cupcakes.

That sounds good, I think there was a post not too far back that used lemon with vanilla as well.

Earl Grey!

My friend makes the best lemon cupcakes with earl grey frosting. ♥

I would make vanilla, chocolate cupcakes and have the following frostings: chocolate, marshmellow, peanut butter, and raspberry. I would also have a bunch of candies to decorate with.

I think I am leaning towards just vanilla and chocolate with that kind of variety of frostings.

Cream cheese frosting goes well with either chocolate or vanilla cupcakes. I usually flavor my cream cheese frosting with some lemon juice or extract.

For the cupcake flavors, I'd go ahead and do plain chocolate and plain vanilla plus 1-2 "unique" flavors. People like classic cake flavors. Then you can go a little crazier with the frostings. I like the idea of a citrusy frosting - orange or lemon. And I agree that cream cheese is great on anything! Maybe instead of plain chocolate buttercream do a whipped chocolate ganache for a really decadent chocolate frosting.
mrsnelson 27th-Jun-2008 04:14 pm (UTC)
would you recommend the whipped chocolate ganache over a fudge chocolate frosting?

You could make some marble choc/vanilla cupcakes too if yo want a bit more variety!

I was going to suggest lemon cupcakes as well, but they might not go as well with your frosting choices.
