Community email - yay or nay?

Posted on 06/20/2012 by rhiannon_666
Hiya Bakers,

It's your Friendly Neighbourhood Mod of Indecision back again. Along with my inability to make decisions, I really feel this baby belongs to all of us, so I'd like you guys to be actively involved in the decision-making process.

Now that LJ's Release 93 is officially out it's time to ask you guys how you feel about a new feature: community email. This new feature allows communities to send an email to members of the comm. Communities can't send emails more than once a day, and it is completely opt-out for you guys.

Now, given I moderate your posts I see everything that goes on in the community (well, except comments, I don't have enough free time to stalk you all), but a lot of members don't log in every day, if at all. So this feature may be more helpful to you guys than I think it is.

So how would you feel about updatey emails? I don't see the need to send them more than once a month, but I'll let you guys have your say on that in a momento. Emails would typically include the general goings on in the community: featured posts, theme winners and announcements, news updates regarding any changes in the community. Perhaps we could feature a baker each month and get one of you to write an 'about me' or something? I dunno, I'm just thinking out loud. Let me know what you guys would like to see in it (if anything at all). I'm not sure yet if emails will be text only or can be spiffied up, so that will limit what we can do.

Since it's hard to get people to write a comment at the best of times, here's a poll for you to let me know your thoughts. But I would really appreciate some commenty-feedback on this.

Poll #1847966 Community Email

Would you like to see BBB make use of the community email feature?

I'd like to receive monthly emails from BBB
I'd like to receive fortnightly emails from BBB
I'd like to receive weekly emails from BBB
I'll be opting out of this feature
Fence-sitter option
Emails-are-spam-and-enrage-me option

Aw, I was hoping folks would want it -- it sounds like it'd make the community more communityer. Oh well!
12daysofrain 19th-Jun-2012 03:36 pm (UTC)
I was hoping the same thing. :(

I was warned to expect hostility to the feature haha.

I have to work out what to make of the opt outs. If there's enough interest otherwise I might proceed, given that those who don't want it can opt out. But if it's only a handful then it's probably not worth the effort.

I'm surprised people have voted for weekly!

It sounds like a newsletter, which would be quite nice monthly or fortnightly, a neat round up of news!

I guess my feelings for not wanting it boil down to the fact that I'd rather just have it as a post in the community--I hate having stuff build up in my email, but I might want to be able to look back at the info that would be in a newsletter, which would mean those emails would start clogging up my inbox...I've just always liked that anything from a particular community is only in that community, which makes it easier to search for stuff when I'm going "wait, was it there or there or..."

which makes it easier to search for stuff when I'm going "wait, was it there or there or..."

My thought exactly. When information is spread out it's hard to remember where something in particular came from. I already have a hard enough time keeping info from different communities straight; I'm hesitant to add e-mail to the mix.

This entirely.

There is too much email in my life as it is and I don't need more. I have the community on my friends page and read every post.

I enjoy this community as it currently is.

Personally, I'm ambivalent. It would be easier to just make a post to the community, but if the mods can see it as a useful feature, then I don't mind. It's restricted to once a day only anyway, at least according to the news post.

I think it sounds like a neat idea... But honestly, I go to Livejournal mainly to check BBB... I'd probably get a few emails (weekly would be nice), but I'd probably end up opting out.

I don't see why not, if people are given the option to receive as many or as few as they want :)
roh_wyn 19th-Jun-2012 06:57 pm (UTC)
I think I'd prefer a newsletter or monthly e-mail because I'm far too lazy to go back through old posts to the comm to find what I'm looking for.
ceilidh 19th-Jun-2012 07:38 pm (UTC)
I would only like emails if they were things like changes to posting procedures or rules or something like that.

What she said :)

ohaithr! fancy seeing you here!
rhiannon_666 20th-Jun-2012 01:34 am (UTC)
I realised after posting I should have included an "only for important updates" option. Doh.
arrietty 19th-Jun-2012 08:18 pm (UTC)
I check LJ nearly every day, so anything else going into my inbox would not be read. In fact I'm more likely to read it on here than as an email.
etxeberria 19th-Jun-2012 09:24 pm (UTC)
I want livejournal to stay on livejournal. I don't want it migrating to facebook (where I keep in contact with friends), tumblr (where i only look at certain tags), or my email (a place where I go to read important information, not a digest of entries I've already read).

It becomes redundant when I'm getting the same information from multiple sources.
querulouspeg 19th-Jun-2012 11:00 pm (UTC)
While usually of the emails-are-spam/opt out persuasion, since it would be an email about baking delish cakes and biccies, I can't see as I would be particularly irritated to receive such an email.
sororcula 19th-Jun-2012 11:30 pm (UTC)
I don't have much of an opinion either way so I voted fence-sitter, but if you do implement them, I would prefer monthly e-mails and I would definitely give it a few months to see what they were like before choosing whether to opt out.

As far as content goes, this might be more work than you'd want to do but I like the idea of a little link/recipe round-up each month.
i_paint_the_sky 20th-Jun-2012 12:42 am (UTC)
I watch my LJ friend's page constantly but I still wouldn't mind something if it came once a month. And altogether we have a decent number in favour of some emails, if you put all three yes options together (presumably someone who wouldn't mind things weekly/fortnightly would also be okay with once a month).

A monthly round-up post on LJ would also have my support though, just to make sure I haven't missed anything and it would make it easier for people who only check out things occasionally to see what was going on.
rieyll 20th-Jun-2012 02:04 am (UTC)
I chose the on the fence option, since I wouldn't mind a monthly email on any important stuff. But I regularly check my friends list on LJ, also I've liked the BBB page on Facebook AND I'm also following BBB on twitter. So if the email is just gonna come up with the same content, then I would likely opt out later. I'm willing to give it a try, though. :)
woobeans 20th-Jun-2012 03:12 am (UTC)
i read all the entries and it's just easier to do it on livejournal, i don't need to see everything twice which is why i voted that i would opt out.

and if i haven't logged in in a while it means i don't care if i've missed anything. :) besides, i can always keep scrolling until i recognize something i've already seen before!
layers_of_eli 20th-Jun-2012 04:37 am (UTC)
Okay, I see a lot of folks saying they don't want to see the same info twice, but the thing I liked about the emails is that they'd provide OTHER/EXTRA info -- like baker bios/spotlights. I also don't mind a link round-up, which is sort of the "same info" but in a table-of-contents like digest for easy scanning. I don't know ... I don't see it as redundant, but an opportunity for expansion/fun community context.
wattle_neurotic 20th-Jun-2012 01:42 pm (UTC)
I voted, and then changed my answer :/ I wouldn't really mind a monthly email, but I know I would probably just glance at it and delete it, since I'm on LJ every day or so; and that in turn would lead to me opting out eventually.
