Cupcake batter vs cake batter

I apologize if this has been asked/brought up before, but I was just wondering if it was possible to use a cupcake recipe as a cake recipe. I know that the inverse is true, that taking a recipe for cake and baking it as cupcakes turns out okay, but what about this way?

For example, I have a really good recipe for red velvet cupcakes, but I've never been able to find one for red velvet cake that works for me. Would the recipe turn out okay if I just divided it among two 9 inch pans and baked, or would I be better off just searching for a proper cake recipe?

This is something that I had been wondering about for a while and I didn't want to test out this theory myself before getting some feedback first. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me.

I don't think it should be much of a problem. The main thing will be time and temperature. The standard temp in baking is usually 350F, and for most cakes I've done it's been about 30-35 minutes. If the cupcake recipe is different from that, then you'll have to plan accordingly and make sure to keep an eye on the progress. Beyond that, I'm not sure there will be enough difference to matter. Cup cakes are just little cakes after all.

I think it's actually harder to get a cake recipe to make cupcakes than the other way. One of my favorite cakes just falls apart as cupcakes when you try to unwrap them. If a recipe is stable nough for cupcakes, it should hold up fine as a cake.

It will be fine, though your bake time will be different. It tends to be longer for cakes than cupcakes, so keep an eye on it and test it.

I have flip-flopped many cake and cupcake recipes. Like coendou said above, the only problem I ever had was when I made "Hershey's Perfect Chocolate Cake" into cupcakes. They stuck to the cupcake wrappers like mad! I found a fab cupcake recipe here on BBB that worked awesome as a cake. I had to double it though because it just made 12 cupcakes.

I do it all the time and almost never have a problem. Keep your baking temp the same but start checking your cupcakes at around 10-12 minutes and every 2-3 minutes after that. Once you have successfully done it, you can just write how long it took on the recipe for future baking.
