Did You Know? August is National Eat Dessert First Month!

Evil Genius
Posted on 07/26/2012 by bubblebubba
So in America, we apparently have something called "National Eat Dessert First" month. These are the 31 blissful days during the year when the sugar on all the grocery store shelves suddenly vanish and national happiness levels skyrocket. Each day in August has a different themed dessert--the month kicks off with national raspberry cream pie day, followed by national ice cream day, and so on and so forth. Are we seeing a completely delicious, delectable idea brewing here? I hope so!

I was wondering if any or all of the community would be interested in observing this fun national dessert month with me--everyone from all stripes, shades, shadows, and spices are, of course, welcome! My tentative idea is that anyone who's interested could sign up for one, two, or three (or more, if you're daring!) of the day themes, with an end goal that we'd have at least one post for every day of August. If you're really excited to make any particular type of dessert, or have been waiting for an excuse to try making one, why not during an official Dessert Month?

So! Any thoughts and/or intrigued participants? I'm probably going to be covering National Eat Dessert First month over on my Wordpress blog (username Wallflour Girl), too, if anyone is interested in leaving comments or joining in over there.

Below the cut is a list of each National Day theme--I hope you check it out! This could be a fun way to do some community bonding, get some bomb baking done, and wow our friends and each other to boot.

EDIT: To everyone to whom I replied with a link to my blog entry and the signup form, I want to apologize if you felt unnecessarily harassed by my external linking. I was looking for an easy way to organize this and it didn't occur to me that it might be a sensitive issue. Sorry! Not that I don't still think it's a helpful idea, but I'd hate to push it on anybody who isn't in this community for that sort of thing. That being said, I've finally found the "edit post" button here and will forge ahead with this helping organize this challenge on bakebakebake. Cheers!

Of all of these, I only know sponge cake and, well, lemon juice, so I guess I'd sign up for the latter. ^^" Yep yep, baking is still a very regional art.
bubblebubba 27th-Jul-2012 11:36 pm (UTC)
Well, lemon juice is in high demand! No shame in that, although you could use this as an experimentation month, eh? *nudge nudge wink wink* If you do decide to sign up, I've made a form over on my blog (it's easier to organize things if I can edit them, and the challenge I'm hosting will include non-baked desserts--like, conveniently, lemon juice!). Hope to have you on board!

I'm certainly intrigued. I had no idea entire month was devoted to glorifying eating dessert first, and I'm all over that. I will be doing at least one dessert with blueberries (one fruit crop here in Michigan that survived the freaky spring heat then frost) next month.
bubblebubba 27th-Jul-2012 11:38 pm (UTC)
I didn't hear about this until two days ago, either! My roommate, who is an absolute ice cream fanatic (think 3 times a day when she's at home with her ice cream family), actually posted about it, which is how I accidentally found out. I hope you do make something though! If you're interested in signing up for any particular one, let me know--I'm hosting this collaborative challenge on my own blog as well so that I can edit things and include non-baked desserts, but no worries if you'd like to stay within bakebakebake--I'm looking forward to what you come up with, either way!

Talking desserts:
Here's something for those of us who want ice cream without "bad stuff" in it:

I've also heard of ice cream that's made with mashed potatoes but haven't managed to track down a recipe for it yet.
bubblebubba 27th-Jul-2012 11:12 pm (UTC)
Oh, we're definitely going to need this if we're going to survive this sugar-crazy month! Thanks a bundle for the link!
thursdayschild 27th-Jul-2012 01:24 pm (UTC)
Maybe the August theme challenge could be inspired by this.
kueken23 27th-Jul-2012 01:29 pm (UTC)
That sounds terrific! I'd love to make a peach pie, so could I sign up for that (August 24)?
bubblebubba 27th-Jul-2012 10:47 pm (UTC)
Yes, yes, and definitely! I'm compiling all of our eager volunteers as we speak/type over on my blog, where I'm hosting the official and full (including non-baked desserts) version of this collaborative challenge if you'd like to sign up for the peach pie! Of course, I understand if you want to stay within bakebakebake (I'll periodically update the sign-ups here), but I'd love to feature your results for the 24th as well if you're interested in participating. The more, the merrier!

rebecky_mo 27th-Jul-2012 01:30 pm (UTC)
I didn't know this existed, but damned if I don't approve of eating dessert first! :D

I've got about 3 cups of frozen raspberries that I picked earlier this month, so at I think at least one raspberry recipe is going to get done. Lemon juice day is tempting as well.

There is one thing I have to say though; IMO, there is no recipe better than just eating an actual Creamsicle on a hot day. Good luck to whoever tries that challenge!
bubblebubba 27th-Jul-2012 10:51 pm (UTC)
I hope you do! One of my favorite sayings is that you never know if you'll choke on a bone during dinner and kick the bucket...so eat dessert first! And I'm really looking forward to your raspberries post, whatever you decide to make. I hope you post (and, if you're interested, I'm hosting a full version of this collaborative challenge over on my blog--so feel free to sign up for one of the raspberry desserts if you think you'd like to participate there too!).

By the way, I *love* your icon!

mavinmaverick 27th-Jul-2012 02:33 pm (UTC)
Well, time isn't always on my side, but I'll sign up for Chocolate Chip day (4th) and Ice Cream Pie day (18th). :-)
bubblebubba 27th-Jul-2012 10:56 pm (UTC)
Totally understandable, and glad to have you on board! I'm compiling the signups via a handy form just to keep everything organized, so if you're interested in participating over there, I'd love to feature your results! (I'll be periodically updating here so that we can still do a community thing, but it's just easier when I can edit entries myself, plus then I'll be able to spotlight non-baked desserts.) Thanks for rallying for the confectioners' cause!

ath_eris 27th-Jul-2012 02:36 pm (UTC)
there are 2 national trail mix days (the 13th and 31th). Is like this or ir a mistake?
rebecky_mo 27th-Jul-2012 02:57 pm (UTC)
I think it's a mistake from the source list; I've seen most August Dessert lists having the 31st as Trail Mix Day.

The only food I've seen for August 13th is Filet Mignon Day; technically baking, with the pastry and all that? Maybe? Or not.
karasumaa 27th-Jul-2012 03:03 pm (UTC)
I'm in for Sundae day (5th), S'mores (10th) and Banana Split (25th) days :D
bubblebubba 27th-Jul-2012 11:11 pm (UTC)
Perfectamundo! If you're interested in signing up via the challenge I'm hosting so that I can organize everyone's themes and send out reminders, I'd love to feature whatever you plan to make! I'll still be updating here, but it's just easier when I have easy editing on my own blog. Wherever you choose to do it, though, I'm glad you're game!

My birthday is Ice Cream Sandwich Day...I'll have to keep that in mind.
bubblebubba 27th-Jul-2012 10:42 pm (UTC)
Oh, and that's coming up soon--I hope you get to make something fun and theme-related! Also, if it's of interest to you, I'm hosting the complete version of this contest (i.e. including non-baked desserts) over at my blog and am especially interested in rounding up any fellow August babies...end point, I'd love to help celebrate and feature anything you come up with for your birthday that you'd like to share!

marlinchen 27th-Jul-2012 06:18 pm (UTC)
There are really two trail mix days (that's the only repeat, too)? What. I don't even like trail mix. ):
bubblebubba 27th-Jul-2012 11:09 pm (UTC)
I completely and totally agree...and have remedied that! I've officially changed the 31st to National Wild Card Dessert Day over on my blog :) it may be un-patriotic to do that, but trail mix is just super duper...boring?
callista88 27th-Jul-2012 08:41 pm (UTC)
My birthday is Trail Mix Day (31st)... I don't even like it! Boring. I am going to reappropriate it to National Rum Day ;)
bubblebubba 27th-Jul-2012 10:39 pm (UTC)
Hear, hear! My birthday is National Toasted Almond Bar day, but I'd much rather have an ice cream sandwich! In case you're interest, I've declared the 31st Wild Card Dessert day over on the themed challenge entry at my blog, so if you're planning on celebrating anyway it would be great to have a birthday guest!

echoinautumn 27th-Jul-2012 08:55 pm (UTC)
If this is a thing, I'll sign up for the peach pie day! :D
bubblebubba 27th-Jul-2012 11:08 pm (UTC)
Oh, it is most definitely a thing! I'm organizing signups via a form if you're interested in participating--it's just easier to compile things when I can actually edit them, so it's at my blog (where I'm hosting a full version of the collaborative challenge, including non-baked desserts) instead of here. I'll still be periodically updating with signups and whatnot here though! Glad to have you (hopefully) on board!

kirei_xo_ai 27th-Jul-2012 08:57 pm (UTC)
Like I need another reason to eat dessert LOL - I should cut back on dessert so I can get back on my pre-pregnancy figure :) However, thank you for the info - have a wonderful day
bubblebubba 27th-Jul-2012 10:58 pm (UTC)
Yes! Totally understandable, and I hope you'll at least enjoy following our virtual progress--no danger in doing that! :) (Although I do have to say that National Lemon Juice Day and National Trail Mix Day sound relatively harmless, right?)
